Having a yard sale is a GREAT way to make some extra cash. Take some time to look through your house, shed, attic, garage and anywhere your “stuff” is stored. Some people don’t want to get rid of their belongings because they feel they will need it at some point, but if you haven’t used it in over a year, it’s time to get rid of it or make some cash off of it if you can sell it at your yard sale!
Having a yard sale can be easy - but to have a really successful yard sale, you will want to do a little work to bring more traffic to your sale. Before you do anything, check with your local town/city office to find out if there are rules/laws about having a yard sale. Once you know the rules, go ahead with your planning. There are many websites that you can advertise your yard sale. Try your local newspaper’s online website as well as sites like www.craigslist.org. List out the type of items you will have for sales - like clothing, toys, tools, etc. You may even be able to include pictures if the site allows. Depending on the laws in your area, you may also be able to advertise with signs near your house or where you are having the yard sale. Make sure that the signs you put up are easy to read for a car that is passing by - use large, black lettering for easy to read signs.
On the day of the sale - be prepared. Make sure you have enough change - you will run into a lot of people who will pay with $20’s for a $4 bill. Also make sure that you have enough bags for people to put their purchases in. Make sure all of your items are priced so that you don’t have lots of people at one time asking “how much is this”, etc. And make sure your items are priced to sell - a good rule of thumb is to price things for 1/3 or even 1/4 of what you paid for them. No one will want to pay full price or close to full price for anything at a yard sale. Those that shop at yard sales are looking for deals and ultimate low prices.
Arrange your tables to put like items together. If you have a lot of CD’s, DVD’s or books, arrange them in alphabetical order so your buyers can quickly find what something they like. Arrange any clothes are selling by gender and by size. If you are selling any electronics, make sure to have an extension cord handy so that your potential buyers can check out if the item works. You may also want to sell sodas or homemade cookies or brownies individually wrapped. Usually kids will be attracted to these and you will be amazed at how you can make some extra money this way! If you follow these tips, you are on your way to hosting a successful yard sale!
